Wood protection standards

The correct choice and use of wood preservative, or already protected wood, is of utmost importance, because these choices determine lifetime of your wooden product or object, as well as the impact the protected wood has on people’s health and environment. For preservative, which may be effective in protecting the covered/indoor wooden elements, it is not necessary to be equally effective in protecting the wood meant for outdoor use like use in contact with water or soil (possibility of washing off protective agent from protected wood, emergence of wood decay and rot), use in other climatic zones (e.g. possibility of termites attack), or use in seawater (possibility marine pests attack). Few means of protection effectively protect the wood against all insect.

A good protection agent should have the following characteristics:
• proven effectiveness and widest possible range of applications
• deep wood penetration, and non-washable feature when exposed to rain or running water
• evenly distributed throughout the cross-section of the wooden element
• contains no volatile matter and doesn’t have strong odor
• when used properly, it is not harmful to humans, animals or the environment
• does not increase the flammability of wood
• enables further processing of the wood (e.g. surface coatings)

When choosing wood preservatives, we must first make sure of its efficiency as well as its correct use and process of protection. Special attention must be paid to selecting the right amount of applied protective agent (in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations), and depending on the application, also appropriate depth of penetration of the protective agent has to be reached. When verifying the effectiveness of protective agent and/or process of use, we can rely on existing SIS EN standards. We choose only preservatives that have been shown to comply with actual/current standards and are proven effective for our purpose of use (testing by independent institutions). When preparing large projects and/or project documentation, it is advisable to consult with experts in the field of wood protection (e.g. Department of wood Science and Technology, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana), who can help you select for your project relevant standards.

Some important, "roof" standards in the field of wood protection:
  • SIST EN 335:2013: Durability of wood and wood- based products - Use classes: definitions, application to solid wood and wood based panels
  • SIST EN 350:2017: Durability of wood and wood-based products - Testing and classification of the durability to biological agents of wood and wood-based materials
  • SIST EN 460:1995: Durability of wood and wood-based products - Natural durability of solid wood - Guide to the durability requirements for wood to be used in hazard classes
  • SIST EN 599-1:2009+A1:2014: Durability of wood and wood-based products - Efficacy of preventive wood preservatives as determined by biological tests - Part 1: Specification according to use class
